This does put me a bit at ease. People have long claimed that they didn't know what to do with Will after season 2, and that never sat well with me. After season 4, though, I got a bit worried that his character would be reduced to "the gay kid," but they've really been stressing that it's just one part of who Will is and that he has a major role in the final season.

I've long theorized (as early as season 1) that the Upside Down represents the closet, and that's why it appears as a hellish version of the real world. Being a gay kid in such an unwelcoming environment can feel like hell with monsters waiting around every corner. It's a place where you feel the need to hide at all times. Dark, menacing, lonely. Will has always lived in such a world. Will being able to fight back against it would be very satisfying.

Time to turn the page on Will being a sad gay kid who works as a Vecna alarm. The boy is done playing a passive role in a life that keeps shitting on him.
